About the Honoree

U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth is an Iraq War Veteran, Purple Heart recipient and former Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs who was among the first handful of Army women to fly combat missions during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Duckworth served in the Reserve Forces for 23 years before retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 2014. She was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2016 after representing Illinois鈥檚 Eighth Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives for two terms.

Senator Duckworth serves on several influential committees where she uses her position to help address the everyday needs of Illinois's working families. As a member on the Commerce, Science & Transportation Committee, Duckworth is a leader in helping make air travel safer and improving transportation accessibility for all Americans. And as a member of the Armed Services Committee, the Foreign Relations Committee and the Veterans鈥� Affairs Committee, Duckworth鈥攚ho has dedicated her life to serving America鈥檚 servicemembers and Veterans鈥攈as continued building her strong record of leadership on national security and foreign policy issues, including successfully working to strengthen our relations with Indo-Pacific nations and improving security in the region and around the globe, all while also securing significant international investments in Illinois.
